Charlie Will Bell III is a former professional basketball player and coach, widely respected for his championship college career at Michigan State University and his contributions across the NBA and European professional leagues.
Early Life and Education
Born on March 12, 1979, in Flint, Michigan, Bell attended Flint Southwestern Academy High School, where his basketball foundation began to take shape. He went on to play for the Michigan State Spartans, becoming a key contributor to one of the most successful eras in the program’s history.
During his college career, Bell helped lead Michigan State to three consecutive NCAA Final Fours and captured the NCAA Championship in 2000. His defensive excellence earned him Michigan State Defensive Player of the Year honors in all four seasons.
Professional Career
Bell went undrafted in the 2001 NBA Draft but signed with the Phoenix Suns as a free agent. He later played for the Dallas Mavericks before expanding his career internationally.
In Europe, Bell enjoyed significant success, competing in Italy with teams such as Benetton Treviso and Virtus Bologna, where he won the Italian League Championship. He also starred in the Spanish League, earning All-Spanish League First Team honors and finishing as the league’s top scorer.
During the 2005–2006 NBA season, Bell signed with the Milwaukee Bucks, recording his first career triple-double and making a strong impact on the roster. Over the course of his career, he played eight NBA seasons and continued professionally until retiring in 2012.
Coaching Career
Following his playing career, Bell transitioned into coaching, serving as an assistant coach with teams such as the Iowa Wolves and the Texas Legends in the NBA G League. He is currently involved with Flint United in The Basketball League, continuing to develop and mentor players.
